Foundations Of Cognitive Science

Towards A Cognitive Dialectic

The course ends with a consideration of whether there are many or one cognitive sciences. It is argued that cognitive science is developing along a dialectical progression, and that all that remains is a synthesis between thesis and antitheses. The classical approach has ideological reasons to resist such a synthesis. Two approaches to dealing with this situation are explored: lessons from natural computation, and the role of forward engineering.
