The purpose of this lecture is to examine the three approaches to cognitive science in the context of music cognition. Analogies are drawn between classical cognitive science and Austro-German music, between connectionist cognitive science and romanticist music, and between embodied cognitive science and modern music. The kinds of music research implied by each analogy are discussed; the possibility of hybrid musical theories ends the lecture.
